John 3:1-15 – Do You Understand?

Posted on

3 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”

10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.[a] 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but[b] have eternal life.

Sometimes we try to rush God. Sometimes we want to know everything about everything right this very minute when we are not nearly prepared for it. God knows what is good for each one of us. He knows when to reveal and when to hold back in order to benefit you. He knows where you specifically are in your walk with Him, and thus knows what will benefit you to know or not to know. Christ explained the baptism to Nicodemus; He had preached before about all kinds of things, but the Pharisees, Nicodemus included, did not understand. So Nicodemus probed more, and Christ told him how can you believe things that are beyond your capacity to understand if you can’t believe the simpler things? We must build ourselves a foundation upon Christ in order to build anywhere or believe anything. A great place to build this foundation is the current Light and Life series at St. Mark’s in D.C. Food For Thought: Acknowledged

Posted on

And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them. (Exodus 2:25)

God heard the cry of His people, the Israelites when they were under the oppression of Pharaoh. He looked at them and acknowledged them. He saw that they were oppressed and acknowledged it, and did something about it (send Moses and deliver them). If He did not hesitate to send His people a deliverer, to redeem His people, how much more will He redeem His people now? We lost a great father this weekend, and we are under great oppression, but don’t you think God, our most perfect and heavenly Father, will take care of us, will guard us, will comfort us? He acknowledges our oppression, our hurts, our pains, our sadness. He is taking care of us, and will continue to do so unto the end of ages. Abouna Bishoy said in his sermon yesterday that when we are left as orphans, God Himself will take care of us and father us (click here to watch). Who better to take care of us than God Himself? He has heard our cries and has acknowledged us.

Food For Thought: Accept It

Posted on

I was listening to one of Abouna Bishoy’s sermons this morning (click here to watch), and something he said really struck me. He was referring to John 13, when Christ washed the disciples’ feet: “It’s like Peter. When Jesus told him, ‘I have to wash your feet,’ he said, ‘No, You’ll never wash my feet.’ And the reaction of the Lord was unbelievable. He said, ‘You have no share with Me.’ Why? Because you don’t know how to accept My love. You don’t know how to accept My healing.”

Am I telling God not to wash my feet? Am I refusing to let Him heal me and cleanse me? Am I denying His love for me? It’s not like He’s trying to give me something bad. On the contrary, He is giving me life, healing, love. What could be better? Let us examine ourselves and see whether we are accepting God’s love and God’s healing or not.

Food For Thought: Changing The World

Posted on

A little over a week ago, in a Bible study Abouna Paul did (click here to view), he asked a very thought-provoking question: If God answered every prayer I prayed in the last 30 days, would anything be different? Would my prayers change MY world or THE world?

What am I praying for? Who am I praying for? Do my prayers reflect God’s will or my will?

Food For Thought: The Good Ones

In the sermon (which can be found by clicking here) after the Gospel reading yesterday in liturgy, Abouna Bishoy said something that really struck a chord for me:

“Can you wait on others? At the same time you are offering love still, and you are being consistent in your love, even if it’s met with rejection? A lot of people who receive love with rejection, they’re not bad people. There’s no one in the world — no one in his right mind — who would offer rejection instead of love, but most likely these people are hurt deeply, so they always expect the worst, so they’re testing your love. The more you’re offering love and it’s received with rejection, the more and the longer you need to be consistent in such love.

Like Abouna said,  a lot of people reject love from others because of their pasts of hurt. To the good ones out there: don’t give up. We may have a lot of stuff that we’re dealing with because of all the things the bad ones – and maybe the oblivious ones — have done to our hearts. We don’t mean to be jerks, or to drag things on. Just wait, because we really are testing out the waters. What smart girl who’s been burned by hot water over and over again is going to just jump right into the water? Things take time, and if you’re one of the good ones, just wait, be patient, and who knows how things will end up?
